Garden Walk About or Guided Tour
A visit to Carambola Botanical Gardens in Sandy Bay is a must for any visitor to Roatán.
Begun in 1985, the Gardens showcase a wide variety of exotic plants. Situated along the banks of “Mahogany Creek” bridges connect walkways that lead the visitor through areas of flowering plants, ferns, spices, fruit trees such as cashew, carambola and the very popular “chocolate trees”, hardwoods including the world famous Honduran mahogany, native orchids, heliconias, as well as other tropical plants.
From the garden, a path leads to the summit of Carambola Mountain. A comfortable twenty minute hike will take you to the top. Be sure to take your camera. Along the way you will see an area where nature has provided almost a sheer cliff. Thus protecting a natural iguana breeding ground historically known as the “Iguana Wall”.
Upon reaching the top, sit and relax on the summit deck and enjoy Roatán’s most magnificent views. All the colors of the reef are laid out before you. Visible to the west, overlooking historic Gibson Bight, is Útila, smallest of the bay Islands. Directly north, Bailey’s Key (with a good lens you may see the dolphins) and the channel out through the reef. Another twenty minute walk will take you back to the valley and into the Garden.
Whether you spend an hour or all day, Carambola Gardens is truly an unforgettable experience, a must see for any visitor to the island.
